While most of us may only be familiar with a handful of names associated with different types of cancer, the truth is that there are hundreds of different forms of cancer that are out there today. There are common and rare forms to be found and each day someone else is getting a diagnosis from their doctor involving cancer. It is always a good idea to familiarize yourself with different forms so that you have a better understanding of what they are and what, if anything, there is that you can do to help prevent this disease. While sarcoma cancer is a rare type of cancer, learning more about them can help you in your efforts to understand and fight cancer.

Sarcomas Differ from Carcinomas

Most of us are more familiar with carcinomas than with sarcoma cancer. Sarcoma cancer occurs more in the connective tissue in the body. You are more likely to find sarcoma in the bones, blood vessels, cartilage, nerves, and fat. There are over fifty types of sarcoma alone, with most falling into two categories – soft tissue sarcoma and osteosarcoma, or bone sarcoma. While there is not a complete understanding of what causes sarcoma, some risk factors have been identified that can raise the risks for you, including if a family member has had sarcoma.

Sarcoma Treatment

While sarcoma is rare, there are effective treatments available, particularly if the cancer is detected in its early stages. Most often, surgery is used to remove the tumor or tumors from the body. Treatment will depend on the individual, where the cancer is located, how developed it is at the time if it has spread to other parts of your body, and other factors. Radiation and chemotherapy are also used as treatments, along with targeted therapies to block the growth of the cancer cells.
