In every Hollywood dispensary, you’ll find strains that are extra potent compared to others. These strains will have more than 20% THC and are known to incapacitate even the most veteran smokers.
Indeed, we are living in an age of strong, hard-hitting cannabis strains. To put things in perspective according to research, THC concentrations are believed to have increased by 14% between 1970 and 2017.
Now, if you’re a recreational user, you’re likely in favor of the more potent strains. But what many aren’t seeing is the potential health effects that come with it. This article isn’t meant to alarm you, but such information is worth taking note of.
A “Paradoxical” Effect
Despite cannabis’ perceived health benefits and society’s more accepting stance towards its use, it wouldn’t be wise to turn a blind eye to its varying effects depending on the dose. As researchers have found, the body’s circulatory system, in particular, is most affected. If low-content THC can improve blood flow, higher-content THC could potentially decrease flow through the vessels because of vasoconstriction.
Another discovery that experts have made is among cancer patients who go through bouts with nausea. It was found that while taking THC in low concentrations lessens the likelihood of such unpleasant episodes, those that take high-content THC suffer from more vomiting and even “intense abdominal pain.”
And while scientists still refuse to make a clear connection between such experiences and high concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol, their sole recommendation is to lessen or even stop cannabis use.
